Portable cabins in Alamosa
Portable log cabins delivered to Alamosa cross exactly one mountain pass on their way from our shop. We build in Gardner, on the east side of the Sangre de Cristos, and Alamosa sits on the west side at 7,543 feet, the hub of the San Luis Valley. The valley is a different world from the Front Range: vast, flat, ringed by the Sangres on one side and the San Juans on the other, with the Great Sand Dunes piled against the mountains northeast of town. It is also full of land, and land is where our cabins earn their keep.
The San Luis Valley: big land, thin margins for bad buildings
Around Alamosa the valley floor is farm and ranch country, and beyond the irrigated ground there is an enormous amount of rural acreage, some of it sold cheap over the decades to buyers scattered across the country. The gap between owning that land and using it is a dwelling, and this is a hard place to build one slowly. Winters on the valley floor are seriously cold; clear nights let the temperature fall hard, and any structure with weak insulation gets found out fast. A cabin finished in our shop, with spray foam insulation standard, arrives already built for that reality.
Over La Veta Pass from Gardner
The route is honest mountain freight: CO-69 down to Walsenburg, then US-160 west over North La Veta Pass at 9,413 feet, through Fort Garland at the edge of the valley, and on into Alamosa, about two hours. US-160 is the main artery between the eastern plains and the San Luis Valley and it carries heavy loads year-round, so the pass is a planning factor rather than a barrier. We pick our weather window, and in winter we schedule around storms instead of arguing with them.

Alamosa-area buyers lean practical. We see hunting and getaway bases on remote parcels, guest cabins on farm and ranch headquarters, and small full-time homes where a conventional build never penciled out. Skid cabins get extra attention here because so much valley land is remote, and a skid build keeps options open. Park model and modular builds fit parcels closer to town and services. All three come out of the same shop, with the same log construction and the same finished-on-arrival standard.

Can you deliver over La Veta Pass in winter?
In good windows, yes. US-160 over North La Veta Pass is a maintained, year-round highway, and freight crosses it all winter. We do not move a cabin into a storm, so winter deliveries get scheduled against the forecast, and occasionally they wait a week. Your cabin sits finished and protected at our shop until the window opens, which costs you nothing.
My San Luis Valley parcel is remote, with rough road access. Can you still deliver?
Sometimes, and we find out before you spend money. Plenty of valley parcels sit on unmaintained roads that are fine in dry weather and impossible after moisture. We scout the route, look at the last miles honestly, and tell you whether the site takes a full-width cabin, a narrower one, or a spring delivery date. A skid cabin often suits these parcels best.
Do I need a permit for a cabin on rural land in Alamosa County?
Expect the county to be involved, yes. What is required depends on the cabin's classification and your parcel's zoning, and requirements differ between the valley's counties, so we will not guess on the county's behalf.
